TEARS IN THE RAIN

THE INITIAL NOTION OF TEARS IN THE RAIN WAS TO CREATE A PIECE THAT RESEMBLED THE WORK OF NAM JUNE PAIK TAKING SOME OF THE TIME ALTERING METHODS USED BY BILL VIOLA. THE PIECE IS COMPOSE OF THREE MID-1990S TVS, ALL ARRANGED AT DIFFERENT HEIGHTS ON WHITE WOODEN COLUMNS. THE PIECE STARTS WITH THE FINAL MONOLOGUE OF THE MOVIE BLADE RUNNER IN WHICH THE VILLAIN TELLS THE HERO WHAT HE HAS SEEN TRAVELING ACROSS THE GALAXY. THE MONOLOGUE ENDS WHEN THE MAN SAYS " LIKE TEARS IN THE RAIN... TIME TO DIE". TWO OF THE SCREENS SHOW A VIDEO OF ME GETTING WET UNDER THE RAIN AS THE MAN SPEAKS, THEN AFTER HE DELIVERS THE LAST LINE BOTH OF THE TVS SHOWING THE VIDEOS TURN OFF AND A THIRD VIDEO SHOWING ON THE SCREEN ON THE RIGHT TURNS ON AS I LAND IN SLOW MOTION INTO A BATHTUB FULL OF WATER. THERE IS NO SPECIFIC READ FOR THE PIECE AS I WANT IT TO BE AMBIGUOUS IN ITS MEANING, MAKING THE PIECE ABOUT THE AUDIENCE AND THEIR PERCEPTION RATHER THAN THE ARTIST.
